UCLA Track & Field Opens 2003 Outdoor Season at Drake Stadium

This Saturday, March 1, Coach Art Venegas will lead the Bruins as they kick off the 2003 outdoor season with a home meet at Drake Stadium. UCLA will host Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Fullerton in a quadrangular meet (9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 individual scoring; 9-7-6 relay scoring). The meet will begin at 9:00 AM with the women's hammer, followed by the men's hammer. The running events will begin at 12:30 with the women's 3000m Steeplechase.

MPSF Championship Results
At the 2003 MPSF Indoor Championships, held February 21-22 in Boise, ID, the Bruin men won their second consecutive conference title, scoring 127.5 points. Stanford placed second with 99 points, followed by Arizona with 74 points.

The Bruins had five champions at the meet. In the running events, freshman Craig Everhart won the 400m (47.68), sophomore Nick Thornton won the 800m (1:51.13) and the distance medley relay team of Phil Young, John Barbieri, Martell Munguia and Ben Aragon won in 9:25.75. In the field events, sophomore Juaune Armon won the long jump (25-1.25, NCAA provisional), senior Scott Wiegand won the shot put in a personal best 65-3.25 (NCAA automatic and No. 7 in school history) and junior Dan Ames won the weight throw (67-9.25, NCAA provisional).

Other top performers were: Denye' Versher (400m, second, 47.86), Munguia (800m, second, 1:52.36), Ames (shot put, second, 64-8.75), Aragon (mile run, second, 4:06.42) and Yoo Kim (pole vault, third, 16-10.75).
