Box Score

LAKEWOOD, CA - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved to 4-0 on Sunday evening at the Long Beach State Softball Tournament at Mayfair Park. The Bruins opened the evening with a 5-1 victory over Long Beach State followed by a 6-2 victory over San Diego State.

UCLA 5, Long Beach State 1
In the first game of the day, the Bruins batted as the home team for the first time this season. After Keira Goerl retired the 49ers in order in the top of the first, UCLA's offense went right to work with a lead-off double by Caitlin Benyi, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Andrea Duran and an RBI single by Stephanie Ramos, who advanced to second base on an outfield error. After a fly ball out to deep right field by Claire Sua, Emily Zaplatosch homered to center field, hitting the manual scoreboard just beyond the fence, to make the score 3-0 in UCLA's favor.

The Bruins added a run in the second inning on a one-out hit by freshman Tara Henry, who scored on a double off of the centerfield fence by Caitlin Benyi.

In the top of the fourth inning, The Beach posted its first run of the game, starting the rally with a lead-off triple by first baseman Colleen Burdick, a ball to deep right center field that Ramos dove for but couldn't catch. Burdick would score on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Johnson, making the score 4-1 in UCLA's favor.

UCLA added a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Sephanie Ramos led off with a single through the right side of the infield. She advanced on two ground-outs and would score on a two-out wild pitch during the at-bat of Lisa Dodd to make the score 5-1.

Keira Goerl improved to 2-0 on the young season with the win in the circle. She pitched seven innings, striking out nine without issuing a walk.

UCLA vs. San Diego State
UCLA manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning as Caitlin Benyi singled through the left side of the Aztec infield, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrea Duran and scored one batter later when Ramos reached on a San Diego State error.

A tough defensive inning for the Bruins resulted in two runs scored by SDSU in the top of the fourth inning, giving the Aztecs a 2-1 lead. UCLA recovered in the fifth inning to re-take the lead by a 3-2 margin. The rally started when Tara Henry reached on the first of two Aztec errors in the inning, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and went to third on a successful sacrifice bunt by Caitlin Benyi. Andrea Duran then hit a long fly ball to right center field that was mis-handled by San Diego State's center fielder. It turned into a four-base error, with Henry and Duran both scoring on the play and giving UCLA the 3-2 lead.

UCLA added three more runs in the sixth inning, aided by a trio of San Diego State errors, to bring the final score to 6-2 in UCLA's favor.

The Bruins return to action on Friday afternoon with a 1:30 pm game against Nebraska at the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas, NV. UCLA will also face DePaul, Portland State, Wisconsin and Michigan in Tournament action.
