By: UCLA Athletics

June 2, 1999

Elisabeth Bachman of the UCLA women's volleyball team has been invited to train for the 1999 World University Games, to be held July 2-10 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The team will train from May 15-June 12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., and will be coached by Jim Stone.

The final 12-member team will be named before June 13, when the squad travels to compete against Canada's national team.

Bachman, a 6-3 middle blocker from Lakeville, Minn., is among eighteen other collegiate women to have been invited. Bachman has previously trained with USA Volleyball and competed in the 1997 World University Games, where Team USA captured the silver medal.

As a junior co-captain at UCLA, Bachman had an impressive 1998 season, leading the team with 167 total blocks and 1.52 blocks per game. She now ranks third on the UCLA single-season block solo top-ten list with 39. With her .368 hitting percentage, Bachman also ranks seventh on the UCLA single-season top ten list.

Bachman was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Nov. 16 and was named to both the 1998 All-Pac-10 Women's Volleyball Team and the 1998 Pac-10 All-Academic Team. She was also a GTE/CoSida All-District VIII Academic Selection.
