UCLA junior defender Luke Mehring has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 men's soccer team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Mehring, a history major who holds a cumulative GPA of 3.4, advances to the national ballot and will be up for consideration for Academic All-America honors.
Mehring, who hails from Malibu, Calif., has played in nine games with six starts for the seventh-ranked Bruins. He has scored one goal this season, heading in a first-half corner kick against second-ranked Maryland in the Bruins' 4-0 upset victory on Sept. 4. Also in that Maryland game, he helped limit the Terrapins to zero shots on goal. He also helped limit Stanford to two shots in an Oct. 2 game. Mehring has contributed to six of the Bruins' 12 shutouts and is part of a defensive unit that ranks No. 1 in the nation in shutout percentage (0.80) and No. 2 in team goals against average (0.39).
In order to be considered for the Academic All-District team, athletes must have at least a 3.2 grade points average, be a starter or a significant contributor and be at least in their second year at the institution.
