Bruin Swimming Heads to U.S. Open

After a week off from competition, the Bruins (4-1, 2-1) will compete at the U.S. Open (long course) December 4-6 in Federal Way, WA.

College Swim Coaches Association of America Poll
In the College Swim Coaches Association of America poll, released November 26, the Bruins were ranked No. 10 in the nation with 131 points. Topping the list was defending NCAA Champion Auburn with 200 points. UCLA was one of five Pac-10 teams ranked in the Top-10.

U.S. Open and Trojan Invitational
This weekend, December 4-6, eleven Bruins will compete at the U.S. Open. Seniors Cathy Coler, Jackie Lobdell, Sara Platzer, Malin Svahnstrom, Kristen Tinney and Naoko Watanabe, juniorMelissa Miller, sophomores Liz Keating and Kim Vandenberg, and freshmen Jane Imagane and Katie Nelson will represent the Bruins.

The U.S. Open will take place at the Weyerhauser-King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, WA. Approximately 900 athletes (male and female) will compete at the three day event. All events will be swum in a long course meters facility (50 meters).

2004 NCAA Qualifiers
Five Bruins have automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, held March 18-20, 2004 in College Station, TX, and 16 Bruins have provisional qualifying times.

Automatic qualifiers are Kristen Lewis (200 Fly), Sara Platzer (50 Free), Kim Scarborough (400 IM), Malin Svahnstrom (200 IM/Free) and Kim Vandenberg (100/200 Fly).

Provisional qualifiers are Katie Arnold (50 Free, 100/200 Back), Shellene Catalano (200 Breast), Jane Imagane (400 IM, 400/1500 Free), Courtney Iversen (200/400 IM), Kristen Lewis (100 Fly), Jackie Lobdell (200 Back, 200 Free), Isabel Miesner (200 IM), Melissa Miller (1500 Free), Katie Nelson (200/400/1500 Free), Sara Platzer (100/200 Free), Kim Scarborough (200 IM), Lindsey Smart (200 IM), Malin Svahnstrom (100 Free), Amy Thurman (50 Free), Naoko Watanabe (200 IM/Back) and Vandenberg (50/100/200 Free).

The following Bruin relays have also qualified provisionally: 800 Free Relay (Vandenberg, Imagane, Nieto, Winkler), 200 Free Relay (Vandenberg, Thurman, Svahnstrom, Platzer), 400 Free Relay (Vandenberg, Thurman, Svahnstrom, Platzer), 200 Medley Relay (Watanabe, Thurman, Lewis, Svahnstrom), 400 Medley Relay (Arnold, Hovsepian, Vandenberg, Platzer).

2004 NCAA Zone E Qualifiers
Bruin divers Carly Banks, Janine Strack and Paige Thompson have qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships, March 11-13 in Oklahoma City, OK. The top finishers at the Zone meet advance to the NCAA Championships.

National Letter of Intent Signees
During the Fall Signing period, Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher has received four National Letters of Intent. Head Diving Coach Tom Stebbins has received a National Letter of Intent from Heather Peng. Shannon Hackett, Erin Ketchum, Jillian Ochs, Heather Peng and Nicolette Teo will join the Bruins as true freshmen in 2004.

Signees announced November 14, 2003:
Hackett (West Vancouver, British Columbia) attends the Collingwood School. At the 2003 Canadian World Trials, held in June, she swam long course meters best times of 2:03.84 (200 Free), 4:17.58 (400 Free) and 8:54.00 (800 Free). She has a long course meters best time of 2:19.50 in the 200 Fly, which she swam at the Mel Zajac Invitational last May.

Ketchum (Mission Viejo) attends Capistrano Valley High School and swims for the Mission Viejo Nadadores under Coach Bill Rose. Her short course yards best times are 10:04.89 (1000 Free), 16:43.92 (1650 Free), 1:51.79 (200 Free) and 4:54.17 (500 Free). In long course meters, she has best times of 2:17.65 (200 Fly), 8:54.10 (800 Free) and 16:59.76 (1500 Free). Ketchum was a national qualifier in 2003 (1650 Free, 1500 Free and 800 Free) and 2002 (1500 Free and 1650 Free).

Signees announced December 1, 2003:
Ochs (Moraga, CA), a dual sport athlete, attends Campolindo High School. She specializes in the breaststroke and has best times of 1:03 (100 Breast) and 2:22 (200 Breast). Ochs is a national qualifier who competes for Orinda Aquatics under coaches Don and Ron Heidary.

Peng (Palo Alto, CA) attends Palo Alto High School and dives with the Stanford Diving Club. In 2003, she qualified for the Winter and Summer Junior Olympics. She is a former level 9 gymnast and is Palo Alto High's diving record holder.

Teo (Mission Viejo, CA) has already qualified for the 2004 Olympics, where she will represent Singapore. She competes for the Mission Viejo Nadadores and specializes in the breaststroke and individual medley. In the breaststroke, her best times are 1:11.0 (100 Breast) and 2:36 (200 Breast). Teo has swum a best of 2:22 in the 200m IM.

2004 Olympic Trials Qualifiers
With the 2004 Olympics just a few months away, nine current Bruins have already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, held June 7-14, 2004.

Leading the way are seniors Cathy Coler (200m Breast), Kristen Lewis (100m/200m Fly), Jackie Lobdell (400m Free), Sara Platzer (50m Free), Naoko Watanabe (100m/200m Back) and Brooke Winkler (200m IM). Sophomore Kim Vandenberg, the 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, has qualified in the 100m and 200m Fly.

Rounding out the list of Bruin Olympic Trials qualifiers are freshmen Jeana Fuccillo (400m IM) and Jane Imagane (400m/800m Free).

Senior Malin Svahnstrom has qualified for the Swedish Olympic Trials.

Looking Ahead
UCLA will host Washington State at Men's Gym Pool on Wednesday, January 7, at noon.
