Men's Tennis Heads to La Jolla

Feb. 24, 2003

On Tap . . .
Following a grueling week in Kentucky, the No. 1-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (11-1) will get a break from the dual-match season this weekend, as the Bruins travel to La Jolla, Calif. for the 114th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The tournament, which is not an ITA sanctioned event, features a mixture of college, junior and local players. Results will not count in a player's win/loss record. Four teams will be representing the Bruins this week (Tobias Clemens / Chris Lam, Chris Surapol / Aaron Yovan, Rodrigo Grilli / Marcin Matkowski and Erfan Djahangiri / Alberto Francis).

Bruins Reach Semifinals at USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
UCLA posted a 2-1 record last week while competing at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Louisville, Ky. The top-seeded Bruins started the tournament with a 4-0 victory over San Diego State on Thursday. UCLA then defeated No. 8 Duke, 4-1 on Friday to set up a meeting with No. 6 Florida in Saturday's semifinals. In that match, the Bruins lost the doubles point for the first time all year. In singles action, UCLA fell behind 3-0 when Florida won matches at court Nos. 5 and 6. Bruin senior Rodrigo Grilli was able to cut the lead to 3-1 with his victory at No. 3 singles, however Florida ended up clinching the match at No. 2 singles. Second-seeded Illinois defeated Florida, 4-2 in Sunday's final, becoming the team other than UCLA and Stanford to claim the title since 1983.

Bruins in the ITA Rankings . . .
With its loss to Florida at last week's National Indoors, UCLA will likely fall out of the top spot for the first time this season when new rankings are released this Wednesday. The Bruins have been the No. 1-ranked team since the preseason. Individually, Tobias Clemens is ranked No. 12, Erfan Djahangiri is No. 38 and Chris Lam is No. 40. Clemens and Lassi Ketola are ranked No. 39 in doubles. New individual rankings will also be released on Wednesday.
