Santiago, Chile- At the World Junior Track & Field Championships, UCLA redshirt freshman Dan Ames placed ninth in the discus final with a mark of 169-3. Hannes Hopley of the Republic of South Africa won the meet with a mark of 195-2, a new World Junior Record.
On Friday in men's discus qualifying, Ames placed third in the first flight, advancing to today's final with a mark of 175-11. The top effort belonged to eventual champion Hannes, 187-5.
Ames, from Lakeside and El Capitan HS, last summer won the men's discus at the U.S. Junior meet, with a mark of 189-8. Ames redshirted last year at UCLA as a true freshman.
Other Bruin results from the World Juniors have been - freshman Jessica Cosby placing ninth in the women's shot put (48-11 ľ) and sophomore Cari Soong was 11th in the women's hammer throw (178-7). Ames also competed in the men's shot put (53-11 ľ) but did not make the final.
