LOS ANGELES - Ninth-ranked UCLA got a pair of goals from freshman Danesha Adams to defeat local rival Loyola Marymount, 2-1 Sunday at LMU's Sullivan Field. UCLA, which defeated USD, 4-0 in its season opener on Friday, improves to 2-0 on the season. The Lions fall to 1-1 with the loss.
UCLA got on the board quickly as, in just the second minute of play, Lindsay Greco struck a ball from 18 yards out that hit the left top corner of the crossbar. The ball bounced back into play and Adams was able to gather up the rebound and put it past LMU goalkeeper Kelly Yukihiro. The official time of the goal was 1:54.
The Bruins didn't hold the lead for long however, as the Lions tied the game a little less than six minutes later when Jennifer Horn collected a ball in front of the net following a Lori Sims corner kick. Horn then slipped a shot past Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson.
The two teams then played scorless soccer for the next 58 minutes until Adams notched the game-winner at the 77:04 mark. It was at that point that Adams punched in her second goal of the contest off a cross from Bristyn Davis.
Adams has scored four goals in just two collegiate contests, as she also had a pair against San Diego on Friday.
Despite the loss, LMU outshot the Bruins 11-8. Yukihiro made two saves for LMU, while Henderson made six stops in the game.
UCLA returns to action on Sept. 5, hosting UC Santa Barbara at Drake Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
