UCLA Women's Head Coach Jeanette Bolden and the UCLA/USC Dual Meet
Jeanette Bolden has been the UCLA women's head coach since 1994. In those seven years, her Bruin teams have never lost to USC in the dual meet (under Bolden, the Bruins are 7-0 vs. USC, including last season's 86-68 victory at Drake Stadium).

During her Bruin tenure, Bolden has led UCLA to two (2000/2001) NCAA Indoor Championships, six Pacific-10 titles, including the last four in a row, and six top three finishes at the NCAA Outdoor, including second-place finishes in 1995-98-99.

Former UCLA Men's Head Coach Bob Larsen and the UCLA/USC Dual Meet
Bob Larsen succeeded Jim Bush as the Bruin men's track and field coach in 1985 and retired from the position prior to the start of the 1999-2000 season. In his 15 years as the Bruin men's coach, UCLA never lost to USC, compiling a perfect 15-0 record. In Larsen's final season (1999), the UCLA men defeated USC 82-81 on the USC track (it was the closest meet in the history of the men's dual).

During his Bruin career, Larsen won two (1987/1988) NCAA Outdoor Championships, nine Pacific-10 titles, including six in the 1990s, four national dual meet crowns and he had a remarkable career dual meet record of 118-3-1, including 12 unbeaten seasons.

In 1997, he was inducted into the Mt. SAC Relays Coaches Hall of Fame and in 1996, into the CA Community College Cross Country and Track Coaches Hall of Fame.

Jim Bush Remembers UCLA/USC Men's Dual Meet
(Editor's Note: Jim Bush was the UCLA men's head track and field coach for 20 years, from 1965-1984. Prior to 1965, from 1934 (the year of the first UCLA/USC dual meet) to 1964, the Bruin men lost every dual to the Trojans (USC won the first 32 duals meets in a row). In Bush's first season (1965) as the Bruin men's head coach, UCLA lost to USC for the 33rd consecutive time, 83-62 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. But the next year (1966), Bush led the Bruin men to their first-ever dual victory over USC, 86-59 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Overall, Bush would lose to USC and Trojan head coach Vern Wolfe only six times in his career, with win streaks of four years (1972-75) and six years (1978-84, the 1982 meet was nonscoring). His overall record vs. the Trojans was 13-6. During his career as the UCLA men's head coach, Bush directed the Bruins to five (1966-71-72-73-78) NCAA Outdoor Championships, seven conference titles, seven national dual meet crowns and an overall dual mark of 152-21-0 (87.9). In 1987, Bush was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, in 1996 into the U. S. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame and in 1997 into the UCLA Hall of Fame. In the Feb. 2000 issue of Coach & Athletic Director Magazine, Bush was listed as one of the 13 most influential collegiate track and field coaches of the 20th Century. After retiring from UCLA, ironically, Bush went on to become the head coach at USC, from 1991-94. Again retired from collegiate coaching, Bush lives in Los Angeles and is an independent national-elite level coach who enjoys coming back to Westwood and spending time at Drake Stadium.)

"To me, the UCLA-USC dual meet was the most exciting and important meet on our schedule. The weeks leading up to the dual meet were the most exciting days I've ever had as a coach. If you won that meet, your team would be a favorite to win the conference and NCAA Championship. It was my greatest thrill when we won that first meet (1966) in the long history of the UCLA-USC dual series. We did go on to win the conference and NCAA Championships that same season. During my years as head coach, UCLA-USC were some of the greatest dual meets in track and field history. Our 1967 (UCLA won 83-62 at the Coliseum) and 1973 (UCLA won 89-55 at UCLA) meets were labeled, at the time, as the two greatest dual meets in collegiate history. We had so many close meets, and even when we won, I always told Vern (USC head coach Vern Wolfe) that both teams were outstanding and nobody ever really lost - one team just had a few more points."

The UCLA/USC Men's/Women's Dual Meet Series History
In the men's series, which started in 1934, USC leads it 38-29. The Bruins have won the last 22 meets in a row, dating back to 1978 (the 1982 meet was nonscoring).

From 1934-1965, the Trojan men won the first 33 meets in a row (there were two meets in 1945, with USC winning both '82-49 at Berkeley and 82-49 at the Coliseum). UCLA's first win in the dual series was in 1966, 86-59 at the Coliseum.

Overall in the women's series that started in 1984, UCLA leads it 13-3, losing only in 1986, '87, and in 1992. The Bruins have won eight dual meets in a row over the Trojans, dating back to 1993 (Bob Kersee's final season as the UCLA women's head coach).
