Los Angeles - UCLA freshman catcher Ryan Babineau went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, and junior RHP Tyson Brummett tossed 7.0 resilient innings to lead the Bruins to a 6-4 series finale win over No. 19 Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win improves UCLA to 11-11 on the season, while the Rebels drop to 10-6.
Junior Hector Ambriz went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, freshman shortstop Brandon Crawford went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI double and a run scored, and senior Chris Jensen added two hits and a run scored.
Brummett (3-3) earned the win, recording seven strikeouts while allowing three runs on six hits, and senior Josh Roenicke struck out the final batter of the game to earn the save.
Ole Miss scored in the first inning on a two-run double down the left field line by Alex Presley with two outs to give the Rebels an early 2-0 lead.
UCLA rallied with two outs for three runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead over the Rebels. Ambriz led off the inning with a single to right field, and senior Anthony Norman was hit by a pitch with two outs to give the Bruins runners at first and second. Babineau drove a RBI single to right center to score Ambriz from second, and Roenicke followed with a RBI single through the right side to score Norman from third to tie the game up at 2-2. Crawford then placed a bloop double to center field to score Babineau from second base and give UCLA its 3-2 lead.
The Rebels responded in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly by Jon-Jon Hancock with one out and the bases loaded to score Zack Cozart from third base.
The Bruins took a 4-3 lead in the third inning. Senior Chris Jensen singled up the middle to lead things off. Ambriz followed with a bloop single to right field to advance Jensen to third base. Junior Tim Stewart then drilled a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jensen from third.
UCLA added another run to go up 5-3 in the fourth inning. Crawford nailed a one-out single up the middle, followed by a single through the right side by senior Sean Smith on a perfectly executed hit-and-run to put runners on first and third. Jensen then hit a shot off Ole Miss pitcher Lance Lynn for an infield single to score Crawford from third base.
Babineau put UCLA up 6-3 in the fifth inning on a solo home run to left field, his second jack of the season, extending UCLA's home run streak to nine-straight games.
Ole Miss had runners on second and third in the eighth inning and two outs, but freshman Jason Novak came in from the bullpen to strikeout pinch hitter Miles Cabeceiras to end the threat.
The Rebels got a rally brewing in the top of the ninth inning. Ole Miss second baseman Justin Henry led the inning off with a triple to left center, followed by a RBI single C.J. Ketchum through the left side to score Henry and cut the UCLA to 6-4. Chris Coghlan would reach on a fielder's choice after the Bruins were unable to convert a 1-6-3 double play in time, and would advance to second base on a wild pitch by junior Paul Oseguera with one out. Oseguera would strike out Cozart swinging for the second out of the inning. Presley then hit a dribbler to Crawford at shortstop for an infield single, giving Ole Miss runners at first and third with two outs. Roenicke would come in from center field to relieve Oseguera and struck out Mark Wright looking to end the game.
UCLA will next host UNLV on Tuesday March 14 at 6 p.m. in Jackie Robinson Stadium.
