Ninth-ranked Long Beach State upset the second-ranked Bruins, 6-5 in a rain soaked match at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Friday afternoon. UCLA falls to 10-7 on the season, 2-4 in conference action. The 49ers improve to 14-15, 2-6 in MPSF play.
The 49ers took off to a strong lead, which they would never relinquish, going ahead 3-0 after the first period behind two Erik Geoffroy scores.
The Bruins found the back of the net for the first time in the match when Brett Ormsby scored with 4:01 remaining in the second quarter. However, Long Beach scored with 2:32 left to boost its lead back to three and lead 4-2 going into halftime.
UCLA battled hard in the opening minutes of the second half bringing the 49er lead down to 4-3 after goals from Matt Flesher and Michael March. Yet, as the final seconds ticked away in the third period, Long Beach State struck again with 0:02 left on the clock when Kevin Carlson notched his only goal of the contest.
UCLA again dropped the lead to one as Peter Belden scored at the 6:08 mark to bring the score to 5-4. However, the 49ers responded with another goal from Geoffroy less than a minute later. The Bruins did not surrender as Ted Peck scored with only 0:46 left in the match. However, the Bruins could not find the net again as the 49ers picked up their second MPSF victory.
The Bruins will head to UC Santa Barbara tomorrow for another MPSF match-up at 1:00 pm.
