College Station, Texas - Bruin sophomore Benjamin Kohlloeffel reached the final eight at the NCAA Singles Championships Friday, defeating Boise State's Luke Shields in the round of 16.
Similar to his match against Virginia's Rylan Rizza in Thursday's second round, Kohlloeffel, a 9-16 seed, needed to battle back after losing a first set tiebreaker. He regrouped, defeating Shields, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2.
Awaiting Kohlloeffel in the quarterfinals is Old Dominion's Izak van der Merwe, who upset Baylor's Benjamin Becker in the round of 16. He is also the player who knocked out second-seeded Sam Warburg of Stanford in the first round.
