UCLA junior Bridget Dwyer won her first round match at the 102nd Western Amateur in Illinois Thursday, but three other Bruins lost their first round matches at the U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks Championships in Florida.
Dwyer defeated Jaclyn Sanders 1-up in her first round match at Stone Creek Golf Course in Urbana, IL. However, sophomores Charlotte Mayorkas and Yvonne Choe and junior Hana Kim each lost their first round matches by identical 4&3 scores at Ocean Hammond Golf Course in Palm Coast, FL.
Dwyer advances to play a second round match on Friday. Details of her match against Sanders were not immediately available.
Mayorkas led for most of her match before losing 4&3. She was 2-up through six holes before her opponent, Christine Anast of Littleton, CO, birdied the par 4 seventh. Through 10 holes Mayorkas was still 1-up, then Anast squared the match with a par at the 330-yard 11th hole. At the 12th, Anast made the first of three straight birdies to take a 3-up lead. The players halved No. 15, but Anast birdied the 16th to seal the victory.
Choe lost to Amanda McCurdy of El Dorado, Ark. Choe dug an early hole and couldn't climb out of it. She was down five after seven holes and never rallied.
Kim lost to Jennifer Ackerson of Allen, TX. The UCLA junior was down one until she squared the match with a par on the 401-yard par 4 seventh hole. The match remained even through 10 holes until Ackerson birdied Nos. 11 and 12 and parred 13 to take a 3-up lead. Both players birdied the par 5 14th, and Ackerson won the match with a par on the 15th.
