March 5, 2005 -- The seniors and sole junior of the women's rowing team demonstrated their rowing experience by capturing the class race at the 2nd annual Parent/Alumni Day and Class Race. The event, held on Saturday March 5, attracted a large number of family and friends. All cheered on the Bruins as the different class levels competed against one another to secure class bragging rights.
The class race started out with the sophomores against the freshmen 'A' team, with the sophomores pulling in the win. In the second heat, the seniors/juniors easily overcame the freshmen 'B' team, demonstrating their veteran status. A near collision for the seniors/juniors with kayakers in Ballona Creek delayed their race progress, yet they still managed to pull away with a win. In the petite finals, the Freshman 'A' showed their A status by defeating the Freshman 'B' squad. The grand final included a match up of the seniors/juniors and the sophomores, putting members of the varsity squad against one another. In the end, the abilities of the seniors/juniors determined the winner, as they repeated their victory from last year.
The Parent/Alumni Day and Class Race also featured the christenings of five new boats( two 4+'s and three 2-'s), adding to the number and variety of boats in the UCLA fleet. Boats were christened in honor of patrons Nina and Lance Holt, Tamie Dami, Julian Wolfe and Ms. Ford. Each were given boat naming privileges. The event also included a parent row and many family members took advantage of the chance to get into a UCLA racing shell and row with their daughters. A brunch followed the events.
