The 11th ranked UCLA men's golf team took the first round lead at the Western Intercollegiates, hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Course near Santa Cruz.
The Bruins fired a first round score of 283, three-over par, and lead second place Cal State Stanislaus by five shots. UC Irvine, Texas El Paso and UC Santa Barbara are tied for third at 289 and Stanford is sixth at 290.
The second round continues this afternoon.
Junior John Merrick is tied for fifth place after posting a one-under par score of 69. Roy Moon shot even par 70 and is tied for ninth. Sophomore John Poucher and junior Steve Conway are tied for 16th at 72. Travis Johnson is tied for 48th after posting a 76.
