Women's Volleyball Defeats Colorado in Opener

HONOLULU, HI - UCLA opened its 2002 season with a 3-1 victory over Colorado on Friday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center in the opening match of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic. Senior co-captain Lauren Fendrick led the Bruins with 17 kills in the match, and was one of four Bruins with double-figure kills on the evening. Game scores were 30-15, 30-28, 26-30, 30-27.

The Bruins scored the first three points of the opening game, and never looked back. UCLA, running a 6-2 offense that utilized both Krystal McFarland and freshman Haley Jorgensborg as setters, never trailed in the game and cruised to a 30-15 opening game win. Taking advantage of the new libero position, sophomore Chrissie Zartman led all players in digs, notching seven of UCLA's 13 digs in the opening game of the match. Offensively, Brynn Murphy hit .833, connecting for five kills on six swings, while senior captain Lauren Fendrick also downed five kills without an error in the game.

Game two was a battle, with the game tied as late as 27-27. Despite trailing by four points at 24-20, UCLA fought back to tie the game at 26 and again at 27 before pulling out the game by a 30-28 margin. Although Colorado improved on its -.091 attack percentage in the opening game of the match, the Buffalos only hit -.022 in the game two loss.

UCLA and Colorado were very evenly matched through the first half of game three, with the teams recording 10 ties to the 19-19 mark before Colorado started to pull away. With the Buffalos taking a 26-22 lead, the Bruins called a time out and cut the lead to three on a kill by Brittany Ringel, but were unable to compelte the comeback, falling 30-26 to send the match to a fourth game. For the first time in the match, Colorado had more kills than errors in the game, hitting .333 as a team to UCLA's .244.

In game four, the Bruins turned an 18-18 tie into a comfortable 25-19 lead before Colorado started a comeback, cutting the UCLA lead to 25-22 before Bruin head coach Andy Banachowski called a time out. The Bruins responded with a Lauren Fendrick kill, and maintained their lead to close out the match with a 30-27 game four win.

Four Bruins finished the game with double-figure kills, led by Fendrick with 17, followed by Heather Cullen and Brynn Murphy with 13 apiece and Cira Wright with 11. Sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman led all players with 17 digs, and was joined in double-figures by teammates Fendrick and Cullen.

As a team, the Bruins out-blocked the Buffalos by an 11-4 margin, and were led on the blocks by Wright (five block assists) and senior Angela Eckmier, who turned in two solo blocks and three block assists in the match.

UCLA has an off-day on Saturday, then will resume play on Sunday, September 1, against No. 9 Ohio State at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic.
