Stone Mountain, Georgia - UCLA's Jean-Julien Rojer was upset by South Alabama's Kosta Zonchanka, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships on Thursday.
Rojer, seeded fifth in the tournament, did however win his first-round consolation match Thursday, defeating Calle Hansen of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-4.
Bruin junior Lassi Ketola, a lucky loser in the main draw after falling in the final round of qualifying, was forced to take on teammate Tobias Clemens in the first round. Clemens won the match 6-3, 7-6(4), however was beaten, 6-4, 6-0 by 12th-seeded Daniel Klementz of Middle Tennessee.
The Bruins fared much better in doubles Thursday, winning both matches. Following their singles battle, Clemens and Ketola teamed up to beat Yale's Steve Berke/Dustin West, 9-8(5). UCLA's Marcin Matkowski and Rojer defeated Johan Brunstrom/Ryan Mauck of SMU, 8-5.
Play continues Friday and concludes with the singles and doubles championships on Sunday.
