Marina Del Rey, CA - The No.13 Bruins dominated the waters at the 30th annual Miller Cup at Marina Del Rey on April 16th, capturing wins in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, and novice eight. The Bruins edged out the competition from Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, University of San Diego, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara to finish the day in top form. After splitting the Miller Cup with LMU last year after a tie in the cup race, the varsity eight fully regained the title.
This is the third consecutive year the Bruins have brought home the Miller Cup, and is their 16th title since 1976. The varsity eight outrowed their competition by over 15 seconds in the grand final, finishing the 1500m course in a time of 4:47.58 against San Diego State (5:08.20) and UC Santa Barbara (5:04.18) for the cup title.
The second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight also outrowed their competitors, placing first in each of their preliminary heats, as well as the grand finals. The second varsity eight finished ahead of San Diego State (5:25.42) and the University of San Diego (5:20.28) in the grand final, with a time of 5:08.69. The varsity four defeated San Diego State (6:09.09) and the University of San Diego (5:58.68) in a time of 5:43.46. In the novice eight grand final, the Bruins edged out San Diego State (5:27.5) and the University of San Diego (5:45.8) to finish in a time of 5:25.7.
"It was a great day for the Bruins," says Head Coach Amy Fuller Kearney. "We had success in every event, which is always a fun way to end our competitive season at home. It was exciting to see the Bruins ahead in every race, and to bring the Miller Cup back to UCLA."
For the Bruins, the Miller Cup marked the last home race of the season, and the last home race for eight seniors.
Coming Up - The Bruins will travel to Lake Phalen to compete against the University of Minnesota on Saturday, April 23. Last year, the Bruins captured the win against Minnesota at their home course in Marina Del Rey.
