No. 25 Bruins Keep on Rolling

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team (11-10, 1-8 Pac-10) continued its winless spell against No. 25 UCLA (8-9, 7-3) after the Bruins defeated the Beavers in three games at Gill Coliseum Friday evening. Game scores were 15-6, 15-13 and 15-10. OSU has never beaten UCLA in 26 meetings between the schools in the sport of volleyball.

"It was inexperience again," said coach Jeff Mozzochi. "The key thing is that we need to have players make some run-stopping plays. When a team goes on a run, we need to stop the momentum so we don't let a two or three-point run turn into a six-point run." He was referring, in part, to two quick Bruin starts in games one and three.

UCLA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opener and cruised to an easy 9-0 advantage in the third game. Oregon State never managed to come back in the first game, but it did cut into the lead in game three. OSU went on its own run and got within 12-9, but the Bruins held on for the win. UCLA was aided by an offensive spark from Kristee Porter, who had a match-high 19 kills and hit .364 on the night. Porter also had a match-high 10 digs. Elisabeth Bachman added 14 kills and a match-high nine blocks.

Oregon State gained much of its offense from Eleftheria Koukou, who hit .333 with a team-high 13 kills. Koukou also served two aces, her first two in a Pac-10 match this season. Despite Koukou's strong showing, the Beavers hit just .120 as a team. No other OSU players had more than eight kills, and none of the other hitters hit better than .167.

"It was nice to see Ria have such a nice offensive performance, but we needed someone else to have a little more offense for us," said Mozzochi.
