No. 2 UCLA Men's Soccer Team Hosts MPSF Foes UC Irvine, San Diego State

This Week - The No. 2 (Soccer America) UCLA men's soccer team (11-1 overall, 4-0 in the MPSF Pacific Division, winners of nine straight) will host MPSF opponents UC Irvine (6-8-1, 1-1) and San Diego State (4-9, 0-2) this weekend in the start of a five-game homestand. The Bruins will face UC Irvine on Friday, Oct. 22 at 3:00 before hosting San Diego State on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:00 pm. Both games will be played at UCLA's North Athletic Field.

In the Rankings - UCLA stayed at No. 2 in the Soccer America rankings but moved up two in the NSCAA rankings and one in the SoccerTimes.com poll to No. 4. UCLA is the top-ranked team in the NSCAA Far West region.

About the Anteaters - UC Irvine is coached by George Kuntz, who is in his fifth season. Kuntz' Anteaters rank third in the MPSF in scoring with an average of 1.93 goals per game. Junior forward Eric Monterastelli leads the team with 20 points (9g, 2a), and Jesse Peron, Saul Wolf and Jon Spencer each have 10 points.

About the Aztecs - San Diego State is coached by Chuck Clegg, who is in his 18th season. Junior midfielder Milton Economy is the only Aztec in double-figure scoring, totalling 10 points (4g, 2a). Goalkeeper Brian Barnes holds a GAA of 2.10, and the Aztecs rank second-to-last in the MPSF in team goalkeeping (1.81 GAA).

Last Week - The Bruins remained undefeated in MPSF play after a 6-1 win over UNLV and a 2-1 win over New Mexico on the road. McKinley Tennyson, Jr. and Martin Bruno scored two goals apiece in the UNLV contest, and Shea Travis and Ryan Futagaki also added a goal apiece. Tennyson scored again against New Mexico, and Adam Cooper's first goal of the year was the game-winner.

Tennyson, Jr. Ties School Record, Earns Weekly Honors - Junior forward McKinley Tennyson, Jr. (Indianapolis, IN) tied a school record held by MLS stars Joe-Max Moore and Billy Thompson by scoring a goal in five consecutive games. Tennyson has also recorded a goal or assist in each of the last six games. For his efforts this weekend, Tennyson was selected the MET-Rx/UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week.

Three Bruins to Vie for MAC Award - Three UCLA standouts, the most among all colleges, have been selected as candidates for the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Player of the Year award, the official NSCAA/adidas award for Division I players. Named to the ballot are junior defender Carlos Bocanegra, senior midfielder Pete Vagenas and senior midfielder and three-time nominee Sasha Victorine, all of whom won bronze medal with the U.S. U-23 National Team at the 1999 Pan Am Games. The winner will be selected in balloting by NSCAA member coaches and honored on Friday, Jan. 7. Bocanegra and Victorine are also finalists for the Hermann Trophy.

Player of the Year Updates -

Sasha Victorine: Team co-captain Victorine (Corona, CA) was selected the MET-Rx/UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week for Aug. 30-Sept. 6 after scoring a hat trick in the Bruins' season opener. He was also named the MPSF Player of the Week for Sept. 13-19 after scoring two goals and an assist against USF. Last weekend, he recorded three assists, tallying two against UNLV including one on the game-winner) and one against New Mexico. Victorine leads the team in scoring (a career-high 22 points), game-winning goals (2) and multiple goal games (2) and ranks second in goals (8, another career-high) and assists (six).

Carlos Bocanegra: Bocanegra (Alta Loma, CA) was named the Defensive MVP at the CS Fullerton FILA Classic and recorded a goal and an assist in the Bruins' 4-3 overtime win over Butler. He has been a major factor in UCLA's three shutouts this season and has one goal and one assist this season.

Pete Vagenas: Vagenas (Pasadena, CA), UCLA's team co-captain, ranks fifth on the team in scoring with nine points (2g, 5a). Vagenas scored the game-winning goal against Butler in overtime and assisted on the game-winner in overtime against LMU. He assisted on another game-winning goal last weekend against UNLV.

National and League Leaders - Junior midfielder Shaun Tsakiris (Saratoga, CA) ranks sixth nationally in assists per game with a mark of 0.75 (9 assists in 12 games). His nine assists lead the MPSF Pacific Division. McKinley Tennyson is tied for first in the MPSF with nine goals and is third behind second-place Sasha Victorine in scoring (21 points). Goalkeeper Nick Rimando (Montclair, CA) is first in the MPSF in goalkeeping with a 0.88 GAA. The Bruins are ranked ninth nationally and first in the MPSF in scoring offense with an average of 2.83 goals per game. UCLA is also ranked third nationally in winning percentage (.917).
