IRVINE, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team defeated No. 16 UC Irvine 9-5 in Irvine in an MPSF game. The Bruins would take advantage of five unanswered goals to pull away from the Anteaters and earn the victory. With the win UCLA moves to 18-3 overall and 7-1 in the MPSF.
The Bruins got on the board first with a goal by Kristina Kunkel in the first period. UC Irvine senior Erica Horman tied up the game at 1-1 with the first of ther two goals on the day. Molly Cahill scored a pair of goals for UCLA, one coming on a penalty shot to make it 3-1 Bruins after the first period. Aleah Amr Sunny Hills HS had a breakaway goal early in the second quarter to pull UCI within one. The Bruins would counter with a 5-0 run to takea 8-2 lead. The 'Eaters went on a mini-run of their own, with goals by Robyn Kaake, Erica Horman and senior Erika Ranes to make it 8-5. Katherine Belden scored her third goal of the game for the Bruins to make it 9-5 Bruins.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Woodbury (Rancho Cucamonga HS) has five saves on the day for UCI. Goalkeepers Emily Feher and Tahlia Kerr each spent a half in the net for the Bruins with each picking up one save.
UCLA will wrap up their road schedule on Saturday against No. 4 Long Beach State before returning home next weekend to wrap up the regular season with games against San Jose State and Stanford.
