No. 3 UCLA (6-3; 3-2) ended their Northern California road trip on a positive note, defeating No. 8 San Jose Sate 10-3 at the Spartans home pool. The Bruin defense was outstanding in the first half, holding the Spartans scoreless, while the offense was able to build a 5-0 lead. In the third quarter the Bruins would allow their first goal of the game, but would still outscore the Spartans 2-1, to take a 7-1 lead going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bruins would scored three more times to finish the game with the 10-3 victory.
Senior Robin Beauregard got the Bruins on the board early, scoring a goal with 6:08 remaining in the first quarter. UCLA would jump out to a 2-0 lead with a goal from Freshman Kelly Rulon. In the second quarter goals from Devon McIntyre, Beauregard and Maureen Flanagan would give the Bruins a comfortable 5-0 lead going into the second half. UCLA would continue to score in the third quarter, with goals by McIntyre and Natalie Golda to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead. In the fourth quarter goals from Kristyn Pulver, Katherine Belden and Kristina Kunkel rounded out the Bruin scoring effort to give UCLA the 10-3 victory.
Eight different Bruins found the back of the net, with Devon McIntyre and Robin Beauregard leading all Bruin scorers with two goals each. Natalie Golda, Kristyn Pulver, Kelly Rulon, Maureen Flanagan, Katherine Belden and Kristina Kunkel all scored once for UCLA. For the Spartans, Jessica Levin, Beth Harberts and Dolores Johnson each scored once.
UCLA will travel to Santa Barbara next weekend to take part in the Gaucho Invitational Tournament. The Bruins first game will be on Saturday March 8 at 9:00 AM versus Redlands University.
