COLLEGE STATION, Texas -
The Bruins (8-8) avenged their 10-4 loss to Creighton (1-5) on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the Jays in the final day of the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic in College Station, Texas. UCLA improves to 3-2 in the tournament.
Sophomore right-hander Bryan Beck got his first start of the season, lasting four innings while allowing only one run on one hit, while striking out four.
The Bruins were unable to get on the board in the first five innings. The biggest threat they posted came in the fourth inning when consecutive singles from Billy Susdorf and Wes Whisler put two runners on with no outs. A sacrifice bunt from Chris Denove moved the runners forward. However, Whisler was out at home on a fielder's choice from Hector Ambriz. With two-outs, a fly out to center field from Ryan McCarthy ended the inning.
Creighton got on the scoreboard in the fourth when a lead-off walk turned into the Jays' only run scored. A sacrifice bunt moved Tony Roth to second and he would score on a single from Dan Norquist. After four, the Jays led 1-0.
UCLA took the lead in the top sixth when Whisler led-off with another single. A double to left field from Denove put runners on second and third with no outs. An RBI-ground out from Ambriz scored Whisler to even the score at 1-1. McCarthy drove pinch runner Christian Lewis in with an RBI-single to left center. During Kevin Conlin's at-bat, McCarthy was thrown out on a steal attempt and Conlin grounded out to the shortstop to end the rally. UCLA was ahead 2-1 after five and a half.
In the bottom of the sixth, Garett White relieved David Johnson, who pitched the fifth and did not allow a run. White struck out the only batter he faced, before Chris Cordeiro came in to retire the next two batters.
Cordeiro finished the game for the Bruins, earning his third save of the season. The junior right-hander allowed one hit and struck out one in 1.1 innings.
UCLA will finish up the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic tomorrow with a re-match with the Aggies at 8:00 pm.
