LOS ANGELES -- UCLA senior-to-be Shakedia Jones has been added to the U. S. Olympic women's track and field team as a member of the 4 X 100m relay pool. With her selection, there are now 10 UCLA track and field athletes who will be competing for the U. S. team at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia from Sept. 22-30.
It is from the relay pools that final relay lineups will be selected. For each round of the Olympics, Team USA Coaches must name six athletes from the relay pool as possible participants for that particular round. No more than two of the six names may be changed after the first round. Selection to the relay pool and final relay lineups are at the discretion of Team USA coaches. It is important to note that inclusion in the U. S. Olympic Team relay pool does not guarantee participation in the Olympic Games.
Jones is the second Bruin woman named to the relay pool, joining Andrea Anderson who is in the U. S. 4 X 400m relay pool (Anderson at the U. S. Trials, held in Sacramento July 14-23, placed sixth in the women's 400m, 51.32).
At the Trials, Jones advanced to the semifinals in both the women's 100m and 200m. In the 100m, her semi-final time was 11.32 and in the 200m, her mark was 22.57w.
During her UCLA career, Jones is an eight-time collegiate outdoor and indoor sprint and relay All-American.
Along with Anderson, Jones joins eight other Bruins on the U. S. Olympic T & F team. They are -- women, Gail Devers (100m hurdles), Amy Acuff (high jump), Dawn Dumble (shot put, still needs to make Olympic A standard), Seilala Sua and Suzy Powell (discus) and Sheila Burrell (heptathlon), men - Mebrahtom Keflezighi (10,000m) and John Godina (discus).
