Women's Volleyball Hosts Washington State, No. 2 Washington

Nov. 9, 2005

Junior middle blocker Nana Meriwether is coming off of a Pac-10 Player of the Week performance at Oregon and Oregon State as UCLA completes its four-match road stretch on Tuesday night at Pepperdine before returning to Pauley Pavilion to face Washington State and No. 2 Washington. Meriwether set a school record for blocks in a five-game match on Friday night at Oregon, as well as tying the school record with eight solo blocks in a single match.

Bruins Down Pepperdine in Five
For a third consecutive year, the Bruins and Waves played a five-game match on Tuesday night in Firestone Fieldhouse, but for the first time since 2001, the Bruins exited a tangle with Pepperdine in posession of the win. UCLA built on its strong blocking performance at Oregon last Friday, downing 17.5 blocks as a team in the match. UCLA rallied in the fifth game for the win, overcoming a 13-9 deficit and two Pepperdine match points to prevail 26-30, 30-16, 22-30, 30-26, 17-15. Kaitlin Sather and Katie Carter led the Bruins with 19 kills apiece, while Carter hit .425 for the match with just two errors on 40 swings.

Washington State Cougars (8-18, 1-12 Pac-10)
Washington State is on a 10-match losing streak and is without a Pac-10 victory since a home win over Arizona State on Oct. 1. UCLA won a three-game match over the Cougars on Oct. 14 in Pullman. WSU is coached by second-year mentor Brian Heffernan. UCLA holds a 30-7 all-time record against Washington State. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Jen Barcus (3.18/game), ASSISTS- Gwen Davis (8.26/game), ACES- Jen Barcus (0.25/game), DIGS- Jalen Pendon (4.65/game), BLOCKS- Te'Ara Epps (1.61/game).

Washington Huskies (22-0, 13-0 Pac-10)
The undefeated Washington Huskies travel to Southern California this weekend, winners of all 22 matches this season with 18 of those wins coming in three games. The Huskies have been pushed to give games twice in their past four matches, winning in five at Arizona on Oct. 27 and at home against Cal last Friday night. Head coach Jim McLaughlin is in his fifth season in Seattle, and the Bruins hold a 38-10 all-time record against the Huskies. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Sanja Tomasevic (4.30/game), ASSISTS- Courtney Thompson (14.88/game), ACES- Christal Morrison (0.60/game), DIGS- Candace Lee (4.49/game), BLOCKS- Alesha Deesing (1.12/game).

Banachowski Nears 1,000th Victory -- Wins #998 at Pepperdine
Currently holding a career record of 998-263 (.791), UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski needs just three more wins to become the first Collegiate Women's Volleyball head coach with 1,000 career wins. In his 39th season on the Bruin bench, Banachowski trails only UCLA men's coach Al Scates for wins by a collegiate volleyball coach. Banachowski was an All-America setter for Scates during his collegiate career at UCLA. (Scates holds a career record of 1109-200.) The first women's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass., Banachowski has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles.
