Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team won its third consecutive decision, upsetting second-ranked and previously undefeated Stanford by a 2-1 score in front of 3,466 at Frank W. Marshall Field.

Junior forward Tim Pierce (Dana Point, Calif.) gave UCLA the victory with 1:12 to play in regulation. After receiving a pass from junior midfielder Jimmy Frazelle (Folsom, Calif.), Pierce dribbled down the field and blasted a shot from the top right corner past Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Terris. The goal was Pierce's team-high fifth goal of the year.

UCLA had held a 1-0 lead for most of the game after sophomore midfielder Dru Hoshimiya (South Pasadena, Calif.) scored on a header from a Ryan Futagaki (Fountain Valley, Calif.) corner kick in the 13th minute. Stanford tied the score at the 71:26 mark when Derek Shanahan lofted a shot from 18 yards out past an outreached Bruin goalkeeper Zach Wells. Both teams continued to push for the go-ahead goal until Pierce broke through in the 89th minute.

Wells, a sophomore from Costa Mesa, Calif., made three saves in picking up the victory. Terris had four saves in the loss. UCLA's defense held Stanford to nine shots.

"After a team scores a goal on you, it could deflate you, but our team was not going to let it happen," said Bruin head coach Todd Saldana.

"This was the best atmosphere I've even seen at UCLA, with all of the fans and the band here," he continued. "The team could feel their support."

UCLA's record improves to 6-4-2, 2-0-0 in the Pac-10. Stanford falls to 9-1-0, 0-1-0 in the conference. The league-leading Bruins will take on Washington on Fri., Oct. 19 in Seattle.
