The No. 7 UCLA divers fell to Indiana 39-18 in a diving dual meet in Bloomington, IN. Freshmen Marisa Samaniego and Tess Schofield, along with senior Paige Thompson led the Bruin contingent at the meet as several divers posted season best point totals in their dives.
Although the Bruins lost, it was still an incredibly successful weekend for UCLA as several divers achieved the NCAA Zone qualifying standards in their events.
"We did a really nice job on both days and we've got a whole group going to the NCAA zone meet, and I couldn't be happier," said Dive Coach Tom Stebbins.
On the platform, Schofield posted a season best point total of 244.875 to place fourth overall, while freshman Brittany Hill was fifth (232.45), also with a season best total. Junior Sara Clark rounded out the Bruin platform divers with a seventh-place finish and a season best score of 215.895. Indiana's Lindsay Weigle won with a score of 304.75.
On one-meter, every Bruin competitor posted a season best, as Samaniego led UCLA with a second-place finish (295.50, NCAA Zone qualifier). Thompson placed third with a score of 289.95 (NCAA Zone qualifier), while Clark finished fourth with 283.725 points (NCAA Zone qualifier). Schofield was ninth (247.50) and Hill finished 10th (237.825) to round out the 1M competition. Christina Loukas of Indiana won with a score of 331.20.
On three-meter IU's Weigle won again (357.75), while Thompson led the Bruins with a third-place finish (305.55, season best, NCAA Zone qualifier). Clark finished fourth (293.175) and Samaniego was fifth (290.475) as both posted Zone qualifying marks and season best point totals. Hill (259.65) and Schofield (244.675) placed ninth and 10th, respectively as both posted season best marks.
The divers will return to action on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 as they host Stanford and California. Diving begins at 12:00 pm on Friday and 11:00 am on Saturady.
