LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA men's soccer team extended its winning streak to nine games by defeating UC Irvine 2-1 in front of a UC Irvine record crowd of 1,155.
UCLA jumped out ahead early, with Sasha Victorine scoring just 1:20 into the game on a mis-cleared ball by the Anteater defense. Sean Walker received the assist on the play.
The Bruins continued to attack, and at the 44:40 mark, Ryan Lee hit a long pass that found UCLA's leading scorer Seth George, who put the ball past UCI goalkeeper Kevin Mehrens to go ahead 2-0. The goal moved George into seventh place on UCLA's career goals scored list with 43. He now ranks sixth with 112 career points and second with 16 game-winning goals.
UCI came firing back in the second half, scoring on a penalty kick in the 55th minute. After a UCLA foul inside their own box, Anteater senior Pat Lee buried his seventh goal of the season underneath the Bruins' keeper Nick Rimando.
Mehrens kept the game close for the Anteaters, recording six saves in the second-half (seven total). UCLA's Rimando made three saves, two in the second half.
UCLA improves to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the MPSF. Irvine drops to 6-6 overall, 0-1 in the MPSF. UCLA's next game will be Sunday, Oct. 18 at Cal State Fullerton at 4:00 pm.
