No. 8 Bruins Travel to Arizona

March 8, 2005

Bruins Head to the Desert . . .
Eighth-ranked UCLA (12-2) heads to the desert this week for a pair of non-conference matches against the Arizona schools. Action kicks off this Friday with the Bruins taking on Arizona State (4-2) in Tempe at 1:30 p.m. UCLA leads the all-time series 56-2. On Saturday, the Bruins travel to Tucson for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with Arizona (6-4). UCLA has never lost to the Wildcats and takes a 54-0 record into the match.

UCLA Players Compete at Pacific Coast Doubles Championships . . .
Bruin players got a break from team competition last weekend, taking part in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, Calif. The best results of the tournament were turned in by the teams of Mathieu Dehaine / Kris Kwinta and Jason Nguyen / Jaysen Chung, as both advanced to the round of 32.

UCLA Upset By Cross-Town Rival USC . . .
The Bruins suffered just their second loss of the season on Mar. 1, dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 17 USC at the Marks Tennis Stadium. Despite capturing the doubles point and taking the first set on four of six courts in singles, the Bruins ended up winning just one singles match. That victory came at the No. 4 position, where Chris Lam was a straight-set winner over Brian Wright. Sophomore Benjamin Kohlloeffel and senior Kris Kwinta both had 12-match winning streaks in singles snapped against the Trojans. The Bruins still lead the all-time series 60-32.

Bruins Fall to No. 8 . . .
UCLA dropped four spots to No. 8 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Mar. 8. The Bruins were ranked No. 4 before last week's loss to USC. Individual rankings were also released on Tuesday. Luben Pampoulov is the highest ranked Bruin in singles play checking in at No. 9. He is followed by No. 14 Benjamin Kohlloeffel, No. 49 Kris Kwinta, No. 66 Philipp Gruendler and No. 95 Alberto Francis. In doubles, Francis and Kwinta are ranked No. 34. New team rankings are released every Tuesday. Individual rankings will not be released again until Mar. 22.

Against The Best . . .
Not surprisingly, Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Luben Pampoulov own the best records on the team against ranked singles players. Kohlloeffel is 12-3, with his best win coming over No. 11 Lars Poerschke of Baylor. Pampoulov is 9-4, registering his best victory against No. 16 Conor Niland of Cal. In all, UCLA players own a 31-23 record when facing ranked opponents this season.

Kohlloeffel Likely First to Reach 30 . . .
At 29-4 overall, Benjamin Kohlloeffel will likely be the first UCLA player to reach 30 singles victories this season. Other players who are likely reach 30 wins this year include Luben Pampoulov (21-4), Alberto Francis (20-7) and Kris Kwinta (18-6).

Briefly Looking Ahead . . .
Following this weekend's matchups in Arizona, the Bruins will take on their final non-conference opponent of the regular season when No. 29 Virginia Commonwealth visits the LATC on Mar. 16. That meeting will be the first ever between the two schools. After that, the Pac-10 counting matches begin, as the Arizona schools make a visit to the LATC the weekend of Mar. 25 and 26.

Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
The 1996 ITA National Coach of the Year and UCLA's 1975 NCAA singles champion, Billy Martin, owns a 265-52 (.836) overall record and is currently in his 12th season as head coach at UCLA. In 11 season's, Martin has guided the Bruins to the national title match three times and has never had a team finish out of the top five at the NCAA Championships.
