LOS ANGELES - Three UCLA tennis players competed in the first day of play at the 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center Thursday.
Bruin sophomore Benjamin Kohlloeffel is the lone UCLA player in the men's singles draw. He won his opening-round match Thursday, defeating Oklahoma's Marek Velicka, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. He will next meet Washington's Alex Slovic in the second round on Friday. There are no UCLA men's teams competing in the doubles draw.
On the women's side, UCLA freshman Riza Zalameda upset 5-8 seeded Jennifer Magley of Florida, 6-3, 7-5. She will next face Washington's Dea Sumantri. Bruin sophomore Daniela Bercek dropped her first-round singles match, falling to third-seeded Megan Bradley, 6-4, 6-3.
Prior to singles play, Bercek and Zalameda teamed together in the doubles draw, defeating William & Mary's Megan Muth/Amy Wei, 8-6. Next up for them will be a match with Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata of Michigan on Friday.
Play continues Friday with another round of doubles and two rounds of singles.
