Bruins Ready for 2000 College Cup Rematch at CSUF Fila Classic . . .
In what is one of the most highly anticipated early season matchups this year, No. 2 UCLA and No. 3 Portland square off in the first game of the 2001 Cal State Fullerton Fila Classic on Sept. 1 in Fullerton, Calif. The Labor Day weekend matchup is the first game of the year for both teams and is a rematch of last year's NCAA College Cup Semifinal in which UCLA won, 1-0. In that match, Bruin forward Stephanie Rigamat scored the game's only goal in the 77th minute of play on an assist from midfielder Venus James. UCLA is 2-0 all-time against Portland, having beaten the Pilots last year and in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1997. In the Bruins' second match of the Classic, UCLA will take on the University of Denver on Labor Day at 11:00 a.m. It will be the first ever meeting for both schools.

Conference Coaches Pick UCLA No. 1 . . .

The NCAA runner-up Bruins received eight of 10 first-place votes, with Cal and Washington picking up the other two. After being the preseason favorite last year, UCLA placed third in the conference with a 6-2-1 league record.

Three Bruins Named Preseason All-Americans . . .
Stephanie Rigamat, Mary-Frances Monroe and Nandi Pryce were all named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSoccer.com. Monroe, a three-time All-American at the University of Connecticut, was named to the first-team, while Rigamat, the Bruins' leading scorer a year ago with 37 points (13g, 11a), was a second-team selection. Despite only playing in six games last year due to a leg injury, Pryce is an honorable mention selection.

Bruins Net Second-Straight Top-10 Recruiting Class . . .
For the second year in a row, online source Soccer Buzz has listed UCLA's recruiting class in the top-10 of its annual class rankings. With the addition of seven talented newcomers to this year's roster, the Bruins' class was ranked No. 7 nationally. Headlining this year's class are transfers Mary-Frances Monroe for UConn and Nancy Mikacenic from Notre Dame. Both bring solid Division-I experience to the Bruins, having played at nationally ranked programs prior to their arrival in Westwood. In addition to the transfers, the Bruins add five extremely talented freshmen. Parade All-American Amy Fazio (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) and U.S. Youth National Team member Sarah Lombardo (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly HS) lead the list of freshmen in 2001. They are joined by Kendal Billingsley (Trabuco Canyon, CA/Mission Viejo HS), Kelly Durbin (Los Angeles/Marymount HS) and Crystal James (Los Angeles/Mira Costa HS). UCLA had the No. 1 recruiting class in 2000 according to Soccer Buzz. The University of Virginia tops the list this season.
