Hayes Wins Silver Medal in 400m Hurdles at World University Games

Palma de Mallorca, Spain - Joanna Hayes added a World University Games silver medal to her USA Championships bronze in the 400m hurdles by running a personal best 54.57 Saturday for second place. Hayes shaved .59 off her previous personal best. Cuba's Daymi Permia won the event with a time of 53.95.

Former Bruin Olympian Suzy Powell advanced to Monday's finals in the discus with a qualifying throw of 186-10.

In the men's competition, Scott Slover placed ninth in the pole vault after clearing 17-4 3/4, and Mark Hauser placed 10th in the 1500m semifinals with a time of 3:55.69. Hauser had qualified for the semifinals by running a 3:48.45 in the qualifying heats.
