At the conclusion of the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, Coach Art Venegas' Bruins finished fourth with 123 points. Leading UCLA was junior Dan Ames, who won the discus, his second Pac-10 title. In all, the Bruins had three Pac-10 Champions. Ames won both the shot put (63-5.50/19.34m) and discus (196-4/ ). And, junior Juaune Armon won the long jump (26-1, 7.95m).
"I think that we fought well," said Venegas. "I would've liked for us to place higher, but I'm very pleased with our point total and our performances. We had some outstanding performances this weekend."
Final Team Point Totals: 1. USC 139, 2. Stanford 128, 3. Oregon 127, 4. UCLA 123, 5. Arizona State 82, 6. Washington State 77, 7. California 54, 8. Arizona 46, 9. Washington 37.
Hammer Throw - In the hammer throw, junior Dan Ames (Lakeside, CA/El Capitan) placed third, scoring six points, with a personal best throw of 206-09 (63.01m, NCAA Regional Qualifier). Ames' throw is No. 9 in school history. With the addition of Ames' points, the Bruin point total increased to 58.
High Jump - In the high jump, freshman Ryan Hollins (Pasadena, CA/Muir) placed sixth, scoring three points, with a jump of 6-10.25 (2.09m, NCAA Regional Qualifier). Senior Kevin Weaver (McLinleyville, CA/McKinleyville) was ninth with a jump pf 6-8.25 (2.04m). With the points, the Bruins' team score improved to 77.
Triple Jump - Hollins, competing in his second event, tied for ninth with a career best jump of 48-7.50 (14.82m, w:+0.8). Junior Juaune Armon (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty), who won the long jump title yesterday, was 14th with a jump of 45-10.75 (13.99m, w: -0.2).
Discus - Ames won his second Pac-10 title with a throw of 196-4 (59.84m, NCAA Regional Qualifier) and scoring 10 points. Senior Scott Wiegand (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) was fourth with a throw of 186-3 (56.78m, NCAA Regional Qualifier, five points). And, freshman Jeremy Silverman (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) was ninth (165-6/50.44m, NCAA Regional Qualifier). With the fifteen points scored by Ames and Wiegand, the Bruin point total improved to 115.
"I can enjoy the victories in the shot put and discus more now that it's over," said Ames. "I would've liked to see us score more team points, but this is a nice notch in my belt."

1500m - In a tough race, sophomore Ben Aragon (Santee, CA/West Hills) placed fifth, scoring four points, in a career best 3:46.95 (NCAA Regional Qualifier). Sophomore Jon Rankin placed ninth in 3:50.28. With the points scored by Aragon, the Bruin point total increased to 62.
110m Hurdles - Bruin sophomores Anthony Golston (San Diego, CA/Point Loma) and Jonathan Williams (Los Angeles, CA/Notre Dame) tallied eight points for the Bruins. Golston placed fourth in 14.09 (w: +3.8, five points). Williams was sixth in 14.21 (w: +3.8, three points). With the eight points, the Bruin total improved to 70.
400m - Freshman Craig Everhart (Tacoma, WA/Lincoln) placed fifth in a career best 46.61 (NCAA Regional Qualifier), scoring four points for the Bruins. UCLA's point total increased to 74 with Everhart's finish.
100m - No entries.
800m - Aragon placed fourth, scoring five points, in 1:50.42 (NCAA Regional Qualifier). Junior Nick Thornton (Vista, CA/Rancho Buena Vista) was sixth, scoring three points, in 1:51.42. With the eight points, the Bruin total improved to 85.
400m Hurdles - The Bruins scored 12 points in the 400m hurdles. Senior Kyle Erickson (Elmhurst, IL/York) placed third in 49.87 (NCAA Regional Qualifier), scoring six points. Senior John Barbieri (Carpinteria, CA/Carpinteria) was fifth, notching four points, in a career best 50.99 (NCAA Regional Qualifier). And Williams, who competed in the 110m hurdles earlier, placed seventh, scoring two points, in 51.64 (NCAA Regional Qualifier). With the12 points, the Bruin point total improved to 97.
200m - Senior Marques Burrus (Petaluma, CA/Petaluma) placed sixth, scoring three points, in 22.11 (w: -0.3). With Burrus' points, the UCLA Point total improved to 100.
5,000m - No entries.
4x400m Relay - The relay squad of Denye Versher (Oakland, CA/St. Mary's), Thornton, Erickson and Everhart placed second, scoring eight points, in a season best 3:07.63 (NCAA Regional Qualifier). With the points scored from the relay, the final Bruin point total increased to 123.
