Top-Ranked UCLA Travels To Bay Area This Weekend

This Week ... Bruins End Regular Season In the "Bay"

The Bruins will conclude their 2001 regular season with a visit to the Bay Area. On Friday (April 20), UCLA will face No. 26 California and on Saturday (April 21) the Bruins will wrap the regular season against No. 4 Stanford. Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 1:30, while the contest against the Cardinal will begin at noon.

Bruins In ITA National Rankings...

The Bruins continued to be the top-ranked team in the nation in the latest ITA rankings released on Apr. 11. UCLA received 87.22 points based on the ITA point-per-match computer formula which is based on a points-per-match ranking system that is implemented in mid-March. Texas Christian is second with 83.33 points, followed by Georgia (82.05), Stanford (79.30), and Duke (78.51) to round out the top five.

In individual rankings released on April 6, Jean-Julien Rojer fell several places and is now ranked No. 9 in singles. Other Bruins ranked nationally include: Tobias Clemens, No. 48, Jean-Noel Grinda No. 78, and Erfan Djahangiri, No. 88. Two Bruins moved back into the rankings, Travis Rettenmaier is No. 90 and Lassi Ketola is slated at No. 94.

In doubles, two teams made the top 50. The tandem of Grinda and Rojer are at No. 13 and Matkowski and Rettenmaier is ranked No. 26.

Last Week...

The top-ranked UCLA Bruins tennis team were perfect last week, defeating College of the Desert (Apr. 11) and Washington (Apr. 13) by identical scores of 6-1 and blanked Oregon 7-0 (Apr. 14) on Senior Day. With the victories, UCLA improved to 18-1 overall (6-1 Pac-10). Grinda played spectacular tennis as he downed Washington's Matt Hanlin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. On Senior Day, he put in another solid performance, defeating Oregon's Oded Teig in straight sets by identical scores of 6-1. He also teamed with Tobias Clemens to defeat Oregon's Teig/Menke, 8-3. Senior Chris Sands also had an impressive performance as he got an ace in his final regular season match at LATC, upending Oregon's Jason Menke, 6-4, 6-0.

Scouting This Week's Opponents...

California

The Bruins last faced the Bears on April 7 a the LA Tennis Center, where UCLA posted a 5-2 victory. Friday's match will be 74th meeting between the squads with UCLA leading the all-time series, 67-6. The No. 26 Bears are coming off an upset victory of No. 10 Pepperdine, 4-3 on Monday (Apr. 16). Leading the way for Cal is John Paul Fruttero who plays at No. 1 and Balazs Veress who is slotted at the No. 2 spot. In doubles, the tandem of Scott Kintz and Erik Dmytruk play at the No. 1 position. The Bears are 13-7 overall and 4-3 in Pac-10 action.

Stanford

Saturday's contest will be the rubber match between the squads as the Bruins first met the Cardinal on Feb. 18 at the National Indoor Championships in Seattle and came away with a 4-2 victory to claim the team title. Stanford faced a shorthanded UCLA squad several weeks ago (Apr. 6) and handed the Bruins its only loss of the season, 4-3 at the Los Angeles Center. The Cardinal will rely on the services of Alex Kim, who is ranked No. 2 on the ITA charts and also plays at No. 1. He also pairs with K.J. Hippensteel in doubles at the No. 1 position. The No. 4 Cardinal clinched their fifth straight Pac-10 title with a 7-0 victory over Arizona last Saturday (Apr. 14). Stanford is undefeated in Pac-10 action (7-0) and 18-1 overall.

The Bruins will next compete in the Pac-10 Individual Championships in Ojai, California on April 26-29.
