AMES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa State's basketball team will fly to Detroit on Tuesday for the next round of the NCAA tournament - with or without coach Larry Eustachy.
Eustachy does not like to fly and he said Monday he had not decided how he would get there. Iowa State plays UCLA on Thursday night at The Palace in Auburn Hills, just outside Detroit.
"As a matter of fact, I might not even go," Eustachy kidded. "I might have the flu because of who we're playing and what they did to Maryland. I feel something coming on. I might have a temperature."
UCLA routed third-seeded Maryland 105-70 in a second-round game Saturday night. Second-seeded Iowa State advanced with a 79-60 victory over Auburn.
Eustachy often drives to and from games during the season while the team flies. He said he doesn't have a mortal fear of flying but just feels more comfortable driving when he can.
"I didn't swim to Hawaii when we played in Hilo," he said. "I'll find a way. When I have to get on a plane, I certainly get on a plane. Obviously, when you recruit you have to do it. With the class we brought in, I didn't do that by taking a skateboard.
"So I can do it. I just don't like it. I wouldn't call it a phobia, but I would prefer to be on the ground than in the air."
