No. 2 Bruins Defeat Rebels, 7-0

Jan. 25, 2005

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's tennis team posted its third shutout in a row Tuesday, registering a 7-0 decision over visiting UNLV at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins remain perfect on the season at 3-0, while the Rebels fall to 0-2.

With a possibility of afternoon showers in the Los Angeles area, both teams agreed to start the match with singles in order to get the match completed. Despite facing two ranked opponents at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions, UCLA's Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Luben Pampoulov turned in a pair of dominating performances. Kohlloeffel, ranked No. 8 nationally, dispatched of 38th-ranked Henner Nehles, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Pampoulov, the country's 14th-ranked player, quickly followed suit, defeating No. 100 Aviram Salomon by the same score.

Another highlight for UCLA came at the No. 6 position, where sophomore Jason Nguyen captured his first-ever dual-match victory following a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sean Hubbard. Other straight-set winners for UCLA on the day were No. 99 Kris Kwinta and freshman Mathieu Dehaine.

The closest singles match of the day came at the No. 4 spot, where UNLV's Romain Massaro split sets with Bruin senior Alberto Francis. Francis, ranked No. 39 nationally, ended up needing a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match, winning 6-4, 4-6, (10-6).

Although the match had already been decided with the Bruins ahead 6-0, doubles play began at the conclusion of singles once it was determined that there was no threat of rain. The Bruins claimed the final point of the day with a pair of victories at court Nos. 2 and 3. Francis and Kwinta, ranked No. 6, defeated Hubbard/Kielbowicz, 8-4 at court No. 2, while next door on court No. 3, Bruin freshmen Dehaine and Jeremy Drean knocked off Blagojevic and Massaro by the same score. UNLV picked up its lone victory on the day at the No. 1 doubles spot, where Nehles and Salomon upset Kohlloeffel and Pampoulov, 8-5.

UCLA returns to action tomorrow, hosting BYU at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
