UCLA Softball Players to Represent Team USA

June 14, 1999

LOS ANGELES - Junior center fielder Christie Ambrosi and sophomore catcher Stacey Nuveman were recently selected as part of a 15-player, Team USA squad, chosen to represent the United States at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, July 23-August 7. Freshman pitcher Amanda Freed was selected to a second USA team that will tour with the Pan Am team, as well as represent the United States at the 1999 Canada Cup.

Ambrosi, of Overland Park, KS, batted .429 for the national champion Bruins this past season, setting school records in single-season hits (103) and stolen bases (25). She also broke the career stolen base record of 29, as she now has 31 for her three-year UCLA career.

Nuveman, of La Verne, CA, led the Bruins in batting (.429), home runs (31) and RBI (91) in 1999, breaking the NCAA record for slugging percentage at 1.016. A finalist for the Honda Award, Nuveman broke the UCLA career home run record earlier in the season and now has 51 in only two seasons of collegiate action. She is on pace to break the NCAA career home run record of 87.

Freed, of Cypress, CA, finished the season with a 27-4 overall pitching record and team-best 0.96 ERA. She went 2-0 at the NCAA Women's College World Series, picking up victories over No. 4 Fresno State and No. 8 DePaul. She batted .357 for the Bruins last season and picked up the save in UCLA's 3-2, NCAA Championship game victory over Washington.

By earning spots on these teams, all three received an automatic invitation to the 1999 USA Softball Olympic Trials, September 2-4, 1999 in Midland, MI.
