Women's Soccer Upset by No. 6 Florida in NCAA Quarterfinals

Los Angeles - Despite dominating most of the match and outshooting the Gators, 28-8, the No. 3 UCLA women's soccer team was upset by No. 6 Florida, 1-0 in double overtime of the NCAA Quarterfinals at UCLA's Drake Stadium on Sunday. With the loss, UCLA ends its season at 20-3, while Florida improves to 21-3-1 and will take on Santa Clara in the NCAA College Cup this Friday.

Florida scored the game's only goal at the 119:04 mark of the second overtime period. In the 120th minute of the match, freshman Monica Hoyles dribbled into the UCLA box and managed to get a shot off that was actually deflected off the side of a UCLA defender and misdirected into the Bruin goal past a diving CiCi Peterson.

"You can outplay teams and still lose," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. "Our goal was to win the national championship, and we fell short."

With the win, Florida snaps UCLA's 26-game home unbeaten streak. Prior to Sunday, the Bruins' last home loss was an NCAA Second Round defeat to BYU back on Nov. 14, 1998.

Florida goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren set a school record for saves Sunday, registering a game-high 16. She broke her own record of 11 set last year.

"We're so excited to go back to the Final Four," said Florida head coach Becky Burleigh. "I feel for the UCLA team. It's a tough way to lose on a goal like that. Our team kept hanging in there and never gave up. When you hang in for that long, good things happen, especially when you work that hard."

Bruin senior Mary-Frances Monroe posted a game-high 10 shots in the loss.
