Men's Tennis to Host San Diego, Ohio State

The No. 1-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (4-0) will play two matches this week, as the Bruins will host San Diego (2-1) on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and No. 24 Ohio State (5-0) on Friday also at 1:30. Both matches will be played on campus at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA has never lost to San Diego, winning all 19 previous meetings. Friday will mark the first ever meeting between UCLA and Ohio St.

Bruins Down Defending NCAA Champion USC, UNLV . . .
UCLA proved too much for defending NCAA Champion USC last Friday, defeating the seventh-ranked Trojans, 6-1 at the Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of USC. UCLA won the doubles point and then took five of six singles matches in the victory. USC's lone point came at the No. 1 singles position where Prakash Amritraj upset 12th-ranked Tobias Clemens, 6-4, 6-2. Last Tuesday, in a tune-up for the USC match, UCLA defeated a UNLV squad with only five eligible players, 7-0.

Fox Sports Net to Televise USC Match on March 7 . . .
Fox Sports Net announced last week that it will televise UCLA's match against USC on Mar. 7 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The match will be aired on a tape-delayed basis and can be seen two days later on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 3:00 p.m. (PST).

Djahangiri Approaching 100 Career Victories . . .
With an overall record of 98-30 in three plus seasons at UCLA, Bruin senior Erfan Djahangiri could earn his 100th career victory this week against Ohio State. Djahangiri has surpassed the 20-win mark in each of his first three years, finishing with a team-high 31 as a sophomore in 2001. He also won 28 as a freshman in 2000 and 26 as a junior last year. He is 13-3 heading into this week.

Transfer Lam Finding Success in Westwood . . .
Not yet a year removed from playing in the top spot at Santa Clara in 2002, sophomore transfer Chris Lam is finding tremendous success at his new school UCLA. Lam burst onto the scene in the fall, posting a 13-3 overall record, while reaching finals at the Omni Hotels Regionals and claiming the championship at the Southern California Intercollegiates. Ranked No. 40 in the latest ITA singles rankings, Lam is perfect in dual-match play at 3-0.

Bruins Remain No. 1 in Latest ITA Poll . . .
Claiming all 10 first-place votes, the UCLA men's tennis team checked in at No. 1 in the latest ITA Team Rankings released on Jan. 29. There was no shift in the top-5 last week, as the Bruins were joined by Illinois, Baylor Stanford and Florida. New team rankings will be released this Wednesday.

Several Bruins Listed Among Fall Singles Rankings . . .
The Bruins had three singles players ranked when the fall individual rankings were released on Jan. 13. Junior Tobias Clemens was ranked No. 12 in the nation followed by No. 38 Erfan Djahangiri and No. 40 Chris Lam. In doubles play, Clemens and senior Lassi Ketola checked in at No. 39. Marcin Matkowski, Rodrigo Grilli and Jean-Julien Rojer were not eligible for the rankings due to sitting out fall play. Individual rankings will not be released again until Feb. 26.

UCLA Selected to Compete at 2003 USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
UCLA will be one of 16 teams vying for the title at the 2003 USTA/ITA National Team Indoors this February. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Kentucky at the Louisville Tennis Club. The 15 other teams selected to compete this year are: Arkansas, Baylor, California, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Harvard, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, San Diego State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas A&M and Texas.
