Los Angeles, Calif. - The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team extended its winning streak to seven games, defeating the fourth-ranked LMU Lions, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Burns Recreation and Aquatic Center.
The Bruins defense was solid throughout, holding the Lions to just 15 shots compared to their 32 on the day as they improve to 17-2 on the year. The Lions suffered just their third loss of the season to fall to 9-3.
UCLA scored the first three goals of the game, two by Kristina Kunkel. However, LMU sophomore Christine Robinson cut the lead to a pair, 3-1, with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The second period was all defense as UCLA managed only a four-meter goal by Kelly Rulon with 1:46 remaining. The Bruins held a 4-1 lead at the break as LMU goalie Rachel Riddell returned to the line-up despite a injured elbow to make eight first half saves. The All-American goalie finished with 13 saves.
UCLA would break the game open with a four-goal third quarter, two coming from Anne Belden. The Lions would hold UCLA scoreless in the third but could not come back, getting just one more goal.
The Bruins next exciting home games are on March 25-26 at 1:00 PM against Maryland and Occidental.
