OKLAHOMA CITY - Keira Goerl pitched her 14th one-hitter of the season while Tairia Mims and Monique Mejia added home runs as UCLA advanced in the Women's College World Series with a 5-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. UCLA advances to play Washington at approximately 7:30 pm PT on Saturday night. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
UCLA manufactured a run in the top of the first inning, as Caitlin Benyi posted a one-out infield hit and advanced to third on a single to right field by Tairia Mims. Benyi would come home to score on an RBI fielders choice by Claire Sua, with Mims out on the play, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead after half an inning of play.
The Bruins added a run in the third inning on a two-out solo home run by Tairia Mims, her 21st of the season and 60th of her UCLA career, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead after two and a half innings.
Louisiana Lafayette cut the UCLA lead in half in the fourth inning, as Becky McMurtry drew a one-out walk. She advanced to second when a Bruin error allowed Tiffany Grayson to reach, giving the Ragin Cajuns two on with two outs. A Joy Webre single to right center scored McMurtry, but Webre was thrown out at second base by UCLA center fielder Stephanie Ramos to end the inning with a 2-1 UCLA lead.
UCLA scored three runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Monique Mejia, scoring Emily Zaplatosch, who had drawn a one-out hit in the inning. Andrea Duran then doubled to left field, hitting the outfield fence. She would score on a double by Natasha Watley, giving the Bruins a 5-1 lead.
That was all the offense that Keira Goerl would need. Goerl improved to 36-7 on the season, striking out eight while pitching her 14th one-hitter of the season.
UCLA will return to action at approximately 7:30 pm PT tonight. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins and Jennie Finch calling the action.
