Los Angeles - UCLA men's water polo seniors John Blanchette and David Pietsch were named to the 2005 MPSF men's water polo All- Academic Team, the conference announced Wednesday. To qualify for the selection, student-athletes were required to carry a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically, and participate in 50 percent or more of the team's season competition.
Blanchette, an attacker from Atherton, Calif., earns MPSF All-Academic honors for the first time in his career. He was an American Water Polo Coaches Association All-Academic pick in 2003. During the season, Blanchette scored a career-best 16 goals for the Bruins, including a career-high four goals in a match against Chaminade on Sept. 3.
Pietsch, an attacker from Manoa, Hawaii, receives MPSF All-Academic honors for the third-consecutive season. He also earned 2005 second-team All-MPSF honors after leading the Bruins in goals scored with a career-best 39 goals on the season. Pietsch ends his UCLA career with 75 goals scored.
