Los Angeles (AP) - Arron Afflalo and Brian Morrison scored 13 points apiece for UCLA and Dijon Thompson had 11 points and 16 rebounds as the Bruins pulled away from Western Illinois in the second half for a 75-60 victory Tuesday night.
UCLA went on a 17-3 run midway through the second half to take control, turning a 43-39 lead into a 60-42 advantage.
The Bruins (2-0) maintained a 9 point lead or better for the game's final 13 minutes.
Eulis Baez led Western Illinois (0-2) with 13 points.
Morrison's steal and over-the-should pass to teammate Afflalo for an easy fastbreak layup gave the Bruins a 53-39 lead midway through the second half.
A layup from Ryan Hollins moments later capped a 12-0 run and extended UCLA's lead to 55-39.
Western Illinois led only twice, at 4-3 and 7-5 in the opening minutes.
UCLA led 39-33 at halftime despite failing to score for the final four minutes of the first half.
Western Illinois could not capitalize, going scoreless for more than three minutes themselves before T.J. Gray made a 3-pointer that trimmed the Leathernecks deficit to six just before intermission. Gray had 12 points on the night, all on 3-pointers.
