USA Women's Volleyball Ends World Univ. Games with Win

July 10, 1999

Palma de Mallorca, Spain - The United States women's volleyball team defeated Canada 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) Saturday at Galatzo in its final game of the World University Games. With the victory, Team USA finishes with a 4-2 record and in ninth place. The U.S. had a balanced attack, featuring four players with at least seven kills, led by Kerri Walsh, who had nine in the match.

Team USA jumped out early on their neighbors to the north, racing to an 8-2 lead in game one. The U.S. was never really threatened after that, as Canada could only get as close as three points the rest of the way (9-6). UCLA's Elisabeth Bachman (Farmington, Minn.), who had another outstanding match for the red, white and blue, had three of her team-high seven blocks in the opening frame.

Though game two was a little tighter, the United States never trailed after a 4-0 run gave them a 9-7 lead. Late in the game, Canada cut the lead to one (21-20) but proceded to commit three consecutive hitting errors. With a game point opportunity, a kill by Nancy Meendering put the U.S. up two games to none.

Game three looked to be a copy of the preceding game when Team USA battled back from an early deficit to hold a commanding 22-18 lead. However, Canada scored seven of the next eight points to steal game three.

The match then looked to be heading for a fifth game when the Canadians grabbed a quick 12-4 lead in the fourth game. Steadily, the Americans chipped away until a 5-0 run pulled them within a point (18-17). Canada continued to hold off Team USA until Walsh and Jenna Wrobel strung together back-to-back kills to give the U.S. its first lead of the game, 23-22. A block and another kill by Wrobel, sandwiched around a Canadian kill, completed the comeback and gave the United States its fourth win in a row.
