Bruins Suffer First Road Defeat To Huskies, 70-67

Final Stats

SEATTLE (AP) -- Brandon Roy scored 20 points, 13 on free throws, and blocked a potential game-tying shot before the buzzer to lead No. 21 Washington to a 70-67 victory over No. 13 UCLA on Saturday.

UCLA had a chance to tie with 9.2 seconds left, but Darren Collison, an 81 percent free throw shooter, made one of two free throws to get the Bruins within 68-67. Washington's Justin Dentmon then made two foul shots with 8.1 seconds left and Roy partially blocked Jordan Farmar's 3-point attempt with 2 seconds to go.

The clinching free throws were a fitting end to a game with 63 foul shots.

Roy's fifth consecutive 20-point game -- despite 3-for-11 shooting -- and 16 points from Dentmon gave Washington (18-5, 7-5 Pac-10) its first season sweep of UCLA since 1987. The Huskies have won three straight over the Bruins for the first time since 1952.

Freshman reserve Alfred Aboya, who has had two knee surgeries since July and came in averaging 3.1 points per game, had a career-high 15 points for UCLA (20-5, 10-3). The Bruins, who had a five-game winning streak snapped, stayed one-half game ahead of California atop the conference but lost for the first time in seven road games this season.

The game had nine lead changes and three ties over the final 9:46, when it advanced from a sputtering grudge match filled with fouls and turnovers.

Washington broke a tie at 60 on post move by Jamaal Williams and a jumper by Bobby Jones with 2:02 left. The lead stayed at four when Roy beat a double-team with a pass to wide-open Jon Brockman, who dunked with 1:09 left.

Arron Afflalo, UCLA's leading scorer, left the game with four fouls with 13:20 left and Washington leading 42-20. Less than 90 seconds later, Bruins center Ryan Hollins fouled out.

Afflalo was forced to return at the 10:08 mark when Farmar got his fourth foul. Then reserve Michael Roll converted a driving layup to give the Bruins their first lead of the second half, 47-46.

Jones, a Los Angeles-area native, gave Washington back the lead at 52-51 with a steal and breakaway, two-handed, basket-rattling dunk that brought the roaring, sellout crowd to its feet with 6:38 to go.
