The fifth-ranked men's water polo team split its matches in the first day of competition at the So Cal Tournament at UC Irvine. UCLA defeated Cal Baptist 13-6 before losing to fourth-ranked Pepperdine, 9-6. The Bruins improve to 2-2 on the young season.
Ten different Bruins scored in the team's 13-6 win over the Lancers. UCLA built a 8-2 lead at halftime and never looked back. Brett Ormsby, Logan Powell and Grant Zider each posted two goals to lead the balanced offensive attack. Redshirt freshman David Shortenhaus scored his first collegiate goal in the contest, while goalkeeper Joe Axelrad recorded four saves.
For the second straight weekend, UCLA fell to Pepperdine in its second game of the day. The Bruins edged the Waves in the first period, going up 2-1 in the quarter. Each both teams scoring two goals each in the second frame, the Bruins had a 4-3 lead at the half. After the Waves scored two goals coming out of the break, Ormsby gave UCLA back the lead on an extra-man goal with 3:13 left in the period. However, the Waves put up four goals in the final quarter to earn a 9-6 victory. Ormsby led the Bruins with three goals, while Brad Greiner, Josh Hewko and Michael March each added a goal. Axelrad posted 11 saves in his first double-digit save performance of the season.
UCLA will return to action tomorrow in a 7:00 a.m. contest against Long Beach State at UC Irvine.
