UCLA Prepares to Host Pioneer Electronics Classic

Team Update - The Bruins began the 1999 Winter schedule with an eighth place finish at the Regional Challenge. The Bruins led by five strokes after the first round, but tough weather conditions hampered play over the final 36 holes. UCLA ended the 1998 Fall season with a solid third place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Nov. 1-3 at the Princeville CC on the island of Kauai, HI. Three Bruins placed among the tournament's top 20 and the team's 54-hole score of 893 was its best of the season. On Oct. 23-25, the Bruins tied for ninth at the Stanford Women's Intercollegiates. The Bruins placed 17th in the Bama Fall Preview, hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Tulsa Country Club, Oct. 5-6. UCLA finished 10th in the annual Dick McGuire Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, Sept. 24-26. The Bruins placed two individuals among the top 20. UCLA ended the Fall season ranked in a tie for 24th.

Next Tournament - The Bruins will host the 1999 UCLA/Pioneer Electronics Classic at Menifee Lakes Country Club, Feb. 22-24 in Menifee, CA. The par 72 course measures 6,019 yards. Results for the tournament will be faxed to each participating school following each day's round. Results also will be posted on the Info Connection Faxback System 800-300-2050. The Juniors

Alexandra Gasser - Returning two-year letterwinner is averaging 76.2 in 14 rounds this season. She "broke out" at the Rainbow Invitational with a collegiate best finish (tied for third), 54-hole score (216) and 18-hole round (70, two-under). Her rounds of 73 and 72 in the first and final rounds, respectively, represented two of her five best scores of the year. At the Regional Challenge, she posted her second straight top 20 finish with a 54-hole total of 229 to tie for 12th. She now leads the team in stroke average, top 10 finishes (1) and top 20 finishes (3). She began this season by tying for 17th place at the McGuire Invitational, highlighted by an even par 73, matching her single round collegiate best at the time. She equalled that round with an even par 73 in the first round at Stanford.

Amanda Moltke-Leth - Two-time First-Team Conference USA transfer from the University of Memphis, where she won four individual titles, including three as a freshman in 1996-97. Averaged 75.4 in 27 rounds last season and entered the 1998-99 campaign ranked 29th with a career scoring average of 75.8. Tied for 17th at the Rainbow event, her best finish as a Bruin and fired a season best of 72 in the final round. Tied for 24th at the Stanford tournament. Currently averaging 77.1 in 14 rounds to lead the team.

The Sophomores

Leilani Bagby - Recorded her best finish as a collegian, tying for 14th at the McGuire Invitational. Fired a first round 74 at the McGuire to match her best collegiate round. Tied for 23rd at the Regional Challenge, which included a first round score of 74, three over par. Tied for 37th at the Stanford event, her second best finish of the season. Has a stroke average of 77.6 in 11 rounds.

Laura Moffat - Recorded a collegiate best finish of 14th at the Rainbow tournament, improving her scores each round (76-73-72-221). The 72 she shot in the final round matched her career best recorded last year at the NCAA West Regionals. Her previous best finish (tied for 18th) was recorded at the ASU/Ping Invitational last Spring. Her stroke average is 79.5 in 11 rounds. Julie Oh fired a career best 74 in the first round of the McGuire Invitational.

Alicia Um -The only freshman last season to compete in all of the Bruins' stroke play tournaments. Last year she posted seven scores of 74 or better with a top finish of tied for seventh at the Pac-10 Championships. She shot a two-under par 70 in the second round and an even par 72 in the final round. She also finished in a tie for 11th at the Stanford event (154) and tied for 16th at the Golf World Invitational (228). Um, who sat out the Fall schedule, is now eligible. She has a career stroke average of 77.3 in 25 rounds.

Garance Dilan - Winner of the 1998 Paris Championships, she is now eligible after adjusting to her college curriculum last quarter.

The Freshman

Giulia Sergas - This newcomer fired a first round par 71 at the Regional Challenge. She finished tied for 27th with a 54-hole total of 232. A freshman from Trieste, Italy, Sergas enrolled at UCLA for the Winter Quarter and is ready to compete. She is a six-time winner of the Italian Championship and a winner of the 1998 European Ladies Championship.

Head Coach Jackie Tobian-Steinmann - The Hall of Fame coach will retire after the 1998-99 season, her 22nd. She guided the Bruins to the 1991 NCAA Championship and 43 career tournament victories. She is the only collegiate coach to win the prestigious Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award twice, most recently on Jan. 27. She was selected as the 1996 NCGA Coach of the Year and voted the 1989 LPGA Coach of the Year. She also has received six regional coach of the year awards. Finally, she has been a pioneer in promoting the collegiate women's game, serving on the California State Amateur Committee, the Rolex Coaches Council and the six-member Rolex Executive Committee for the College Golf Foundation.

A Celebration of Champions
The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
