LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Behind senior attacker Brett Ormsby's five goals, UCLA's third-ranked men's water polo team cruised to a 21-8 victory over #20 Cal Baptist Thursday evening at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. UCLA received scores from 13 different players in the match, including career firsts for four Bruins.
Ormsby netted his five goals all in the first two periods and allowed newcomers like Marco Santos, James Palmer Cameron Smith and Brian Jacobs to score their first career goals.
UCLA also got scores from seniors Albert Garcia, who recorded the first goal of the game less than thirty seconds into the first period on a UCLA 6-on-5. Along with Ormsby, who was a perfect 5-for-5 on shot attempts, junior Michael March and Santos, Palmer and Smith each scored two goals apiece.
Even goalie Will Didinger got into the scoring action for the Bruins as he lobbed a pool-length shot over the reach of Lancer goalie Jon Miller for the first score by a Bruin goalie since Matt Swanson in 1994. Didinger, who recorded two saves, played the final two periods in place of starting goalkeeper Joe Axelrad.
For the Lancers, senior Goran Milic recorded four goals in the losing effort and senior Filip Lugovic contributed a hat trick of his own. The two combined for seven of the Lancers' eight goals.
