Men's Tennis Heads to National Team Indoors

Feb. 4, 2002

This Week . . .
In a strange turn of events, the No. 3 UCLA men's tennis team will face No. 23 Kentucky twice this week. The Bruins had scheduled a dual match with the Wildcats in preparation for the National Team Indoors, Feb. 7-10 in Louisville. However, when the draw was released last week, the Bruins drew Kentucky in the first round. The other six teams in UCLA's side of the draw are: SMU, USC, Tennessee, Duke, SDSU and Stanford. UCLA, which has won the Indoors seven times in 21 tries, is the defending champion, defeating Stanford, 4-2 in last year's final.

Bruins Cruise Through Early Matches . . .
In four matches thus far, UCLA has dropped only two points. The Bruins opened the season with a pair of 6-1 victories over UC Santa Barbara and Fresno State before dismantling UNLV, 7-0 back on Jan. 29. In what was supposed to be UCLA's first true test of the 2002 campaign, the Bruins crushed No. 12 USC, 7-0 on Feb. 1.

Who's No. 1? . . .
Not many teams have the luxury of featuring four different players at its No. 1 singles position, however that's exactly what the Bruins have done in their first four matches. Jean-Julien Rojer, Rodrigo Grilli, Marcin Matkowski and Tobias Clemens have all played in the top spot for UCLA. In doubles, however, that question is more clear as Matkowski and Rojer are not only UCLA's top doubles team, they are the No. 1 team in the country.

Clemens' Streak Reaches 13 . . .
Bruin sophomore Tobias Clemens has not lost a singles match since October and is riding a 13-match winning streak. Back in November, he won five-straight matches en route to the title at the Southern California Intercollegiates, defeating No. 8 Andrew Park of USC in the final. Just three weeks ago he won the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, beating No. 11 Oliver Maiberger of SDSU in that final. Most recently, Clemens defeated Park, 6-3, 6-1 in a dual match on Feb. 1, running his winning streak to 13.

Matkowski/Rojer Headline ITA Rankings . . .
Led by No. 1 ranked Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer, the UCLA men's tennis team had several players ranked in the ITA fall individual rankings released on Dec. 11. In addition to Matkowski and Rojer, Tobias Clemens and Lassi Ketola check in at No. 16. In singles, Matkowski went from being unranked in the preseason rankings to UCLA's highest ranked player at No. 13. Also rounding out the top-20 are No. 18 Rojer and No. 19 Clemens. The Bruins also have two other players ranked in singles as Ketola checks in at No. 89 and Erfan Djahangiri is ranked No. 109. New team rankings will be released on Feb. 13. Individual rankings will be released Feb. 20.
