Athens, Ga. - Bruin junior Marcin Matkowski beat Robert Searle of Rice, 6-2, 6-3 Wednesday in the opening day of competition at the NCAA Men's Individual Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia.
Matkowski, unseeded in the 64-player singles draw, will next face Washington's Alex Vlaski in the second round on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. (PST). Matkowski has already defeated Vlaski twice this season, including a straight set victory in the final of the Pac-10 Championships in late April. Vlaski, a 9-16 seed, advanced to the second round following a 7-6, 6-4 decision over Duke's Michael Yani.
Two other Bruins fell in first round action Wednesday, as fifth-seeded Tobias Clemens was upset by Georgia's Nic Boeker, 7-5, 6-4, and Bruin sophomore Chris Lam lost to Columbia's Oscar Chow, 6-3, 6-2.
